Forth 2 continues with great music from the 60s, 70s and more. Along with this we were joined by a variety of guests from the world of music and entertainment. Tony Christie, David Cassidy, Jason Donovan, Marc Almond, Gloria Hunniford, Des O’Connor, Glen Michael, Jools Holland and Errol Brown to name but a few.
Tonya Macari broadcast live from the QEII for its final voyage and listeners got the chance to win lunch on board.
Listeners also got the opportunity to win tickets to the Radio Forth Awards where they were treated to a fantastic show with performances from Alesha Dixon, Sharlene Spiteri and Leon Jackson among others.
Forth Two also got into the Christmas mood – keeping everyone informed about local events happening during Edinburgh’s Christmas and giving listeners the chance to win tickets to the much sought after Hogmanay celebrations.
Regular traffic and travel reports kept everybody informed.
Radio Forth's Cash for Kids
This year we have been busy continuing to raise money for children with special needs in Edinburgh, the Lothians, and Fife. The big news is that We’ve joined up with 19 other radio station charities across the UK, under the ‘Cash for Kids’ banner, in a bid to increase our funding for local communities by nearly £2.5 million this year!
An additional benefit is the news that Sir Tom Hunter has given his backing to the new group name and has pledged £4 million over the next ten years. The cash will be used to underwrite 50% of the running costs for the charities including this one here in Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife which raised £252,386 in 2007/08 to help sick and underprivileged local children.
By having nationally recognized brand with UK wide reach and local impact we hope we can sign up many other businesses to support our charity to make a positive impact on even more local children
Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids is a name change only, and we remain exactly the same, raising money within Edinburgh the Lothians and Fife, to help local children with special needs.
In May, we held our “Bring a £ to Work Day”, when we encouraged listeners to do just that, and this raised £7,000. We had great fun when the Edinburgh Football Club played a fundraising match for us against MacCrae’s Battalion at Tynecastle. These two historic clubs raised £1,700. Between April and June our own All Stars played several matches and raised another £2,351! In June, Boogie and Dingo took part in the Two Cities Cycle Race, which raised £2,000.
During the Festival, Westwood’s Leisure held their Jazz nights at Fettes, when our own Tonya Macari and Arlene Stuart hosted the events, which brought in another £1,530.
This year Edinburgh’s Royal High School was an official Fringe Venue, when they put on a very professional “High School Musical” and collected a wonderful £1,500! Boogie and Arlene went along to receive the cheque from the youngsters.
We have many listeners who kindly donate anything from pocket money to hundreds of pounds and our website now includes a Justgiving page which makes it very easy to donate on line.
In September we are launching one of our biggest ever projects. The Radio Forth Cash for Kids Radiothon will be broadcast on both forth one and forth two over two and a half days. Listeners will be urged to phone a dedicated telephone number and make their donation to Cash for Kids. The whole station will be involved, as well as an army of volunteers to man the phones!
Events
The annual Radio Forth Awards took place on November 12th 2008. The event saw, James Blunt, Stereophonics, Sharleen Spiteri, Leon Jackson and Alesah Dixon all appear to collect awards and perform at the ceremony. The Radio Forth Awards for 2009 are set to take place on November 18th. The event is designed to give listeners a chance to recognise local community, business and sporting heroes in addition to voting for the musicians who impressed them most last year. Award categories range from top teacher, best pub or club, leading tourist attraction, best Fringe performance to the Best Place to Work. At the event, local winners accept their prizes alongside some of the top names in music and entertainment.
Radio Forth on the Fringe is another new event to be staged by Radio Forth. Taking place at the Liquid Rooms on Saturday 9th August. The event featured some of the very best in Music, Comedy and entertainment, bringing together a slice of all aspects of The Edinburgh Fringe. In light of 2008’s sell out, the event is already being planned to take place again in 2009.
