Similar developments are also underway in Leith, Craigmillar, Pennywell and Sighthill, bringing the number of council homes under construction in the city to around 1,400.

The keys to the first council house to be built in Edinburgh since the mid-80s were being handed to its new tenant on Wednesday afternoon.

Mother-of-two Lynsey Carmichael is moving into a three-bedroom house in Gracemount along with her partner, John and two sons.

Similar developments are also underway in Leith, Craigmillar, Pennywell and Sighthill, bringing the number of council homes under construction in the city to around 1,400.

However, it is estimated Edinburgh currently faces shortage of 15,000 affordable homes.

Edinburgh Council's housing leader, Cllr Edie said: "I’m delighted that this administration has delivered the first new council homes in Edinburgh for a generation.

"These are really exciting times in the capital as our new council homes are going to be built across the city.

"Many people cannot afford to get on the property ladder but developments like these, where affordable homes are available for rent and for sale, represent an important new opportunity for them."

Lynsey, who is moving from a two-bedroom home in Moredun to the brand new house on Garvald Street said she was delighted to be moving into more spacious accommodation.

She said: "Our old house had a bedroom and what was really more of a box room, so we were a bit cramped.

"I can’t wait to meet my new neighbours. There is something special about being the first people to move into such a brand new, clean and bright home."
