It has emerged Edinburgh's environmental wardens are wearing stab vests in case they are attacked by angry dog owners.

There is concern about people turning violent when asked to clean up their pet's mess or being issued with a fixed penalty notice.

The wardens have the power to dish out a £40 on-the-spot fine if they spot someone leaving dog dirt lying on the ground.

Some staff have been assaulted or even threatened with knives.

"Wardens have been equipped with protective clothing since the service began in 2006."
